Story: The Beauty of Enough

fisherman and businessman zen story

The Fisherman and the Businessman

A wealthy businessman was on holiday in a small coastal village. One afternoon he watched a fisherman returning with a small catch of beautiful fish.

"You've finished for the day?" the businessman asked.

"Yes," the fisherman smiled. "I've caught enough for today."

The businessman looked puzzled. "But if you stayed out longer, you could catch more fish."

"What would I do with more fish?" the fisherman asked.

"Well," the businessman replied, "you could sell them and buy a bigger boat."

"And then?"

"With a bigger boat you could catch even more fish. Eventually you'd have a whole fleet."

"And then?"

"You could build a successful company. Employ people. Make a fortune."

The fisherman smiled.
"And then?"

The businessman grinned.
"Then, one day, you could retire to a quiet seaside village... sleep in, spend time with your family, go fishing when you feel like it, enjoy long lunches with friends and watch the sunset every evening."

The fisherman looked out at the sea for a moment before replying,
"Isn't that what I'm already doing?"

A reflection on enough

This story felt like such a lovely reflection for our August theme of enough.
We spend so much of our lives reaching for the next thing: the next goal, the next achievement, the next version of ourselves.

There is nothing wrong with having goals or ambition. But sometimes, when we become too focused on arriving somewhere in the future, we overlook the life that is already unfolding around us.

Perhaps the invitation is simply to pause and ask:

What am I rushing towards?

And...

Is a little of that life already available to me now?

The fisherman wasn’t lacking ambition. He simply hadn’t forgotten what mattered to him. And the businessman wasn’t wrong either. He had worked hard, built something meaningful and was looking towards the future. The story isn’t asking us to choose between the two.

It is inviting us to notice whether, in all our striving, we are missing something that is already here.

Perhaps the beauty of enough isn’t about having everything. Maybe it is about fully noticing what we already have.

“We’re often so busy preparing for tomorrow that we forget today was once the tomorrow we were hoping for.”

This is part of what we explore in Yin & Nidra too: slowing down enough to hear ourselves again, creating space to rest, and remembering that we don’t always need to be striving.
